Vivian J. Snobl

Vivian Snobl age 79 of Roy Lake, MN, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 4, 2012.

Vivian Joanne Hillesland was born September 6, 1932 in Fosston, MN, the daughter of John and Violet (Busse) Hillesland. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen and attended the Jesse Country School followed by Mahnomen High School. After graduation, Vivian went to Moorhead State College. On October 20, 1951 Vivian was united in marriage to Frank Snobl in Mahnomen. The couple made their home in the Mahnomen area before settling at Roy Lake in 1956. In addition to tending to her family and home, Vivian also drove the bus for Naytahwaush Head Start and during the summers was on lookout for fire from the watch tower. Frank died in 2006 and Vivian remained on the farm until her death.

Over the years, Vivian was a member of the Roy Lake Homemakers Club and Nee-Gon-Nee Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was the church treasurer and township treasurer for many years. Vivian also enjoyed crocheting, gardening, bead work and reading. She was an avid baker, making many wedding cakes and donuts, known to many as “Grandma Donut”. Vivian truly cherished all the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Vivian is survived by three sons: Frank “Butch” Snobl, Ada, MN, Donald (Anne) Snobl, Ada, MN, and Steven Snobl, Roy Lake, MN; four daughters: Ann (Dean) Edman, Pequot Lakes, MN, Donna (Keith) Pence, Bemidji, MN, Mary Jo (Rich) Pursley, Shoreview, MN, and Barb (Les) Bjerketvedt of Clitherall, MN; a brother, Jon “Bob” (Geri) Hillesland, Mahnomen; a sister-in-law, Vivian D. Snobl, Central City, IA; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; very close cousin, Clarice DeBoer Crookston, MN; numerous nieces, nephews and the Trautner Family.

Vivian is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, David and grandson, Andy Edman.

A Memorial Service was held Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10:30 am at Nee-Gon-Nee Lutheran Church, Roy Lake. The officiant was Pastor George Gilbertson. Special music was provided by DeeDee Ryan, Pastor George Gilbertson and Wendy Snobl. The urn bearers were Butch Snobl, Don Snobl, Steve Snobl, Skip Stuvland, Dan Snobl, Mark and Wendy Snobl. The honorary urn bearers were all of Vivian’s grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and Louis Fox.

A time of gathering was held Friday, April 13, 2012 from 5-7 pm at the Anderson~Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen.
