Michael W. Amundson

U.S. Veteran

Michael W. Amundson, age 53, of Fraser, CO, formerly of Waubun, MN, died Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Twin Valley Living Center in Twin Valley, MN.

Michael William Amundson was born November 8, 1959 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Palmer and Laurena (Brehm) Amundson. In 1962, the family moved to Waubun to make their home. Mike attended grade school and high school in Waubun and graduated with the class of 1978. Following high school, Mike joined the United States Navy. He served on the USS Truxton (CGN-35), and traveled around the world. After his honorable discharge in 1986, Mike lived in Fargo, ND, for a short time before heading to Colorado for his first job as a “ski bum”. His love for the mountains kept him in Colorado and he made his home in the village of Winter Park. Mike worked at Winter Park Resort operating equipment and maintaining the ski lifts on several different runs generating from Mary Jane, one of the tallest peaks in the resort.

In addition to his love for travel and the mountains, Mike also liked to ride motorcycle whenever possible. In his high school years, he was known to pull a few pranks and joke around, but as time went on he turned into a hard working individual with a high standard of work ethic. He had a tremendous will to live and fought hard to the very end. Even through the difficult times, he didn’t complain and always had a smile that would light up any room. Mike truly enjoyed spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews and treasured everyday as a moment of borrowed time.

In January of 2012, Mike was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and began receiving treatment and guidance at the VA Hospital in Fargo. He was able to return to his home he loved in Colorado for about 6 months before coming back to the area in October of 2012 to be closer to family. Michael is survived by his parents, Palmer and Laurena Amundson, Waubun; two sisters, Becky Radi, East Grand Forks, MN, and Brenda (Todd) Gross, Fargo, ND; two brothers, Mark (LoAnn), Fargo, and Morris “Dude”, Arthur, ND; four nieces and nephews: Sarah (Nathan), Rachelle, Matthew, Hannah; three step nieces and nephews: Denise (Craig), Dana (Cory) and David (Anna); three great nieces and nephews: Rylan, Kiley and Kenly; several aunts, uncles and cousins, in addition to his extended family of many friends in Colorado.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun at 11:00 am.

Visitation was on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.
