U.S. Veteran

Palmer A. Amundson Jr., age 86 of Waubun, MN, died Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Palmer Arnold was born July 18, 1926, the son of Palmer A. and Anna (Boutto) Amundson Sr. in Virginia, MN. He grew up near Virginia and graduated high school from Cook, MN. Following high school, Palmer worked in the mines before entering the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, Palmer attended college in California for airplane mechanics. He then moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked for Northwest Airlines as a mechanic. Palmer met Laurena Brehm and they were united in marriage on September 2, 1952, in Minneapolis.

In 1962, Palmer and Laurena moved to her family’s farm near Waubun and helped out with the day to day farming chores and driving cattle truck. Later, Palmer began driving truck over the road for Wylie; closer to home he hauled beets during the fall sugar beet harvest. Palmer’s last full-time employment was as a tour bus driver, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He met many people and traveled most of the United States, including Alaska. After his retirement in the mid 1990’s, Palmer continued to work for area farmers and keep busy with small jobs.

Palmer liked hunting and fishing, but more so playing cards, especially pinochle and watching game shows like ‘The Price is Right.” He loved to read and spend time with his grandkids and always memorable when the family was able to get together. Palmer was a member of the Mahnomen American Legion and the Ogema VFW for many years. He was also a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he faithfully attended the Thursday morning Men’s Bible Study.

Palmer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Laurena, Waubun; sons, Mark (LoAnn), Fargo, and Morris “Dude”, Arthur, ND; daughters, Becky Radi, East Grand Forks, MN, and Brenda (Todd) Gross, Fargo; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Sharon) Amundson, Virginia, and Michael Amundson, Cook; sister, Peg Kirby, Winsted, MN; sister-in-law, Audrey Amundson, Duluth, MN and Beatrice Amundson, Cook; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael on January 25, 2013; brothers, Jim and Ron Amundson; sister-in-law, Pam Amundson; and brother-in-law, Don Kirby.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.
